Solution
Upgrade to the latest version of Newsgroup Image Collector and Web Image Collector.

Reason
This is due to the way the license system operates when generating a unique code in the license file. Your computer hostname is used during the license generation, and you may have a dynamic hostname from certain DHCP servers.

A critical bug fix for Web Image Collector 2006 was released in version 1.4. This update includes a completely redesigned delete process. If you currently use Web Image Collector 2005 or 2006 1.1, 1.2, 1.3, it is highly recommended that you upgrade to the latest version now.

WIC does not keep an internal list of all downloaded files. It simply removes the files and folders inside the folder that you selected to delete. This was a major design flaw in WIC as the folder selected to delete could be your desktop or My Pictures folder. We immediately repaired the issue and released an upgrade package in the update service.

Current versions of WIC now use an interactive delete wizard which is further described here.

Privacy when using Web Image Collector
Using Web Image Collector is safe and private where the only activity recorded on your computer are downloaded images. WIC does not create or use a log file of places visited, nor will it store cookies or a history of visited sites. All images are downloaded to your computer in the location that you specify. As WIC visits web sites to download images, information such as your IP address may be recorded at the web site. You can prevent this by using an anonymous proxy tool such as <a href="http://www.multiproxy.org/">MultiProxy and configuring WIC to use a proxy.

Software Update Service
WIC includes a built in software update service. This service will communicate with our web site and check for new versions. The information sent from WIC to our server is your language (English, Spanish), operating system (Windows, Mac) and the version of WIC.

Privacy when purchasing from this web site
By default, we do not store your credit card and billing address information. You can choose at purchase time to store this information for future purchases. If you choose to do so, your information will be stored in our database with a strong key encryption applied to your credit card data. Your personal information is never shared or sold, except when making a purchase by credit card. In this case, we send your information securely to our merchant credit card processor. As an alternative, you can make purchases using PayPal and keep your personal information stored at PayPal. For more information, please visit our privacy statement page.

Sites that do not work at all
Some websites are not accessible by WIC such as Sony Image station or Yahoo groups. These sites require special programming for the best download experience, and we are currently working on these items.

The trouble behind most non working sites can be:
A complex membership login process
A layer of javascript to obtain the image URL (Sony ImageStation)
A flash or applet that displays the images, not the HTML of the web page.

Sites giving you trouble
WIC may have trouble downloading images from websites until you properly train it. Some websites are very large and have a big number of web pages. If you tell WIC to download images from the entire web site, you may be waiting for a long time for it to complete. Furthermore, running WIC on the entire web site is not a friendly thing to do to the web site and it’s administrators. This takes up bandwidth and may slow down the web site for other users. To remedy this, you can use one or more features in WIC to focus on the images you need, and ignore the unwanted areas of the web site. These features include the sequence download and the page and image url filters.

To learn about using URL filters please click this link.

Still having trouble?
If you encounter a website that does not work with WIC, please check our online forms first to see if anyone has offered a solution. If not, please post a request or contact our support department for assistance.

WIC is an assistant for downloading images from web sites. It can read every page in a web site and save all the images to your computer. It can also search the Internet for images by name or keyword.

WIC can access membership web sites using your login account or membership ID. Once inside, WIC can download all images in the membership area.

WIC can perform batch downloads of images in sequence. Some web sites order their images using letters or numbers such as “image01.jpg” “image02.jpg” “image03.jpg”. Using the sequence feature, WIC can quickly download all the images in the batch list.

Using WIC is quick and easy. Simply enter a web site address (URL) such as “http://www.datafire.com” or keywords like “Grand Canyon”, then select a location for storing images. If you search by a web site address, WIC connects to the site and looks for images on every page at the site. If you search by keywords, WIC connects to multiple search engines and queries them for images matching your keywords. As images are found, they are downloaded to your computer, and they appear on the screen as thumbnails. While the search is running, you can click on the thumbnails to view the images in full size.

Skipping Unwanted Web Sites or Images

Web Image Collector can be configured using advanced settings to skip images using several different rules. These rules can check the image width and height, the image file size, and the image file name so that unwanted images are not saved on your computer.

When you create a new image collection, there are several rules that are automatically set. You may want to adjust these rules before you start collecting images.

To configure WIC to skip unwanted web sites or images, you need to edit an existing image collection or select the use advanced features checkbox when creating a new image collection. To learn more about how to reach this screen, please read the tutorial on how to use advanced features.

Configure The URL Filter

This is where you control the filter of including or excluding web pages and images based on one or more keywords. The keywords can be free text such as the word ‘puppies’ and every time a URL to a web page or an image is encountered, the URL is compared to the keywords in the filter list. If any of the keywords are found within the URL, the URL will be skipped or included based on the filter setting. The case of the keywords is ignored, so you can enter ‘PUPPIES’ or ‘Puppies’ and have the same result.

For example, if your keyword list contains the word ‘puppies’, and WIC encounters the URL www.somesite.com/images/puppies.jpg then the filter will include or exclude the image based on the Filter mode.

Disable filter
This option will disable or turn off the filter. All entries in the filter list will remain, but will not be used.

Include only listed items
This option will include all URLs to web pages and images that contain one or more items in the list. This option results in a very limited set of results.

Exclude all listed items
This option will exclude all URLs to web pages and images that contain one or more items in the list. This option results in a clean and more specific set of results.

Configure The File Filter

This is where you control the filter of including or excluding images based on the file types. For example, you can include or exclude images of .JPG, .PNG and more. The case of the keywords is ignored, so you can enter .JPG or .jpg and have the same result.

Disable filter
This option will disable or turn off the filter. All entries in the filter list will remain, but will not be used.

Include only listed items
This option will include all images that contain one or more items in the list. This option results in a very limited set of results.

Exclude all listed items
This option will exclude all images that contain one or more items in the list. This option results in a clean and more specific set of results.

Configure The Image Size Filter

This is where you control the filter of including or excluding images based on the width and height of the image. This page includes a size list for specific image dimensions to filter, and it includes a minimum and maximum dimension filter. As images are downloaded to your computer, they are compared to the options on this page to determine if they should be skipped.

For example, if an image of 460 wide by 180 high is encountered, the dimensions are compared to the filter list and minimum / maximum settings. If you specified a maximum image size of 400×400, the image is skipped. If you specified a minimum image size of 500×100, the image is skipped. If you specified an exclude filter and specified an entry of 460×180, the image is skipped.

Disable filter
This option will disable or turn off the filter. All entries in the filter list will remain, but will not be used.

Include only listed items
This option will include all images that have the exact width and height dimensions specified in the list. This option results in a very limited set of results.

Exclude all listed items
This option will exclude all images that have the exact width and height dimensions specified in the list. This option results in a clean and more specific set of results. You can use this option to filter out common advertisements and more.

Minimum image size
You can specify a minimum width, height, both or none. For example if you set a minimum width of 50 and a minimum height of 50, all images smaller than 50×50 are skipped. You can leave the heigth field empty and just specify a minimum width of 50 so that an image of 60×10 is downloaded. You can also reverse this and leave the width field empty. To disable this option, leave both width and hight fields empty. This option is useful for filtering out thumbnails.

Maximum image size
You can specify a maximum width, height, both or none. For example if you set a maximum width of 500 and a maximum height of 500, all images larger than 500×500 are skipped. You can leave the heigth field empty and just specify a maximum width of 500 so that an image of 60×600 is downloaded. You can also reverse this and leave the width field empty. To disable this option, leave both width and hight fields empty.

Configure The File Size Filter

This is where you control the option of image file size filtering. This option allows you to set a minimum and or a maximum file size in kilobytes (KB). When images are downloading, they are compared to these options and if the file size does not meet the minimum or maximum settings, the image is not downloaded.

Minimum file size
This is the smallest allowable file size in KB. Images smaller than the number here will not download. If this field is blank, this option is ignored.

Maximum file size
This is the largest allowable size in KB. Images larger than the number here will not download. If this field is blank, this option is ignored.

How To Send Images By Email

Web Image Collector 2006 includes a built in email feature to send one or more images to one or more email addresses. To use this feature, select one or more thumbnails in the display area. You can select an image by clicking in the grey area outside of the image, but within the thumbnail container square.

The following image shows selected images in the display area.

Click the email button on the toolbar. Note: This button is disabled until you select images in the main thumbnail area.

Files to Send

After clicking the email button, you will arrive at the email files wizard.

This initial page shows the selected files and the total size of all the listed files. These files will be sent as attachments to an email so that others can have the same files.

Delivery Settings

At this page, you specify how the email is sent through the internet. If you already know your email SMTP server (advanced) we suggest that you enter this information in this page. Otherwise the email will attempt to send directly to your email recipient(s). The direct method will not always work depending on your ISP (internet service provider) which may block sending mail directly.

Attempt to send mail directly without using a mail server.
This is the default option that will attempt to send your email directly to the recipient(s) email addresses. This option works in most cases however your internet service provider may block this channel of communication. If you have troubles using this option, you should use the second option of sending email using a mail server.

Send email using a mail server
This option is the fail proof method of sending email messages. To use this option, you must know your Internet Service Provider (ISP) mail server name and port. Most mail servers use port 25 so you can leave this as default. To obtain your ISP’s mail server name, either contact your ISP or you can check the mail settings in your email program (such as Outlook) and find the SMTP server name.

Host
This is the mail server host name. You can usually find this in the settings for your email program under SMTP server or outgoing mail settings.

Port
This is the the standard port for SMTP mail. Leave this at 25 unless you know your mail server uses a different port number (rare case).

Email details

From here, you specify where to send the email message and who it is from. All fields are required on this page.

My name
This is where you type in your name, and it will appear as the sender of the email.

My email address
This is where you type in your email address.

Send email to
This is where you type in one or more email addresses to send the files to. If you enter more than one email address, you must use a comma ‘,’ to separate the addresses.

Subject
This is the subject of your email message.

Optional message

From here, you can set an optional message to be sent with the email.

Optional message
This text field lets you type in an optional message to go along with your email. You can type in any message of any size, or you can skip this page. Click next when you are ready to continue.

Sending email

From here, you will see the status of sending the email message.

Web Image Collector can automatically log into numerous membership web sites. It supports several different methods that are used on the web for membership login. When you add your login name and password to the image collection settings, you can then access membership areas and download member access images.

A small number of web sites use advanced membership login methods and WIC may not be able enter the membership areas. For example some web sites use javascript manipulations to alter your login information. Others may require that you type in a cryptic phrase from an image. These sites are currently not accessible by WIC using the automatic login feature.

If you are not sure what type of membership login a site uses, you can always try and see if WIC can enter the membership area.

Configure Your Login

This is where you can specify a username and password to automatically login to membership based sites. This feature works with basic authentication, simple web based forms, and AVS membership sites.

A web site that uses basic authentication will always prompt you for a username and password using a popup window from your browser. For these sites, use the login name and password fields.

A web site that simple web based forms will have a username and password form on the web page and it does NOT contain an image with a number or phrase to type in as a passcode. For these sites, use the login name and password fields.

A web site that uses AVS (adult verification system) membership such as Adult Check, Adult Pass and others will have a single ID field. For these sites, use the AVS field.

Login name
This is where you specify a login name for your membership ID

Login password
This is where you specify your login password for your membership ID

AVS Membership ID
This is where you specify your AVS membership ID or password. If your AVS membership has both a user ID and password, then use the login name / password fields instead.

When using the membership login option, it is always best to start WIC at the membership sign in page.

Introduction

WIC is the perfect tool for collecting images from one or more web sites. It gives you the ability to download all images from a single web page or from the entire web site. WIC can also search the entire web for images based on one or more keywords.

Getting started

When you first start Web Image Collector (WIC) you will arrive at the startup screen. Simply click the Start button in the center to create your first image collection.

New Image Collection Wizard

The first step in using WIC is to create an image collection. This is how you tell WIC the images you want and where to save them. At the first page of the New Collection Wizard, you have three options and a text field. Select an option and type in your search text in the field.

Search for images at the web site
This option lets you specify a web address (URL) to a web site or a page within a web site. Images found on that web site will be saved to your new collection. If you want to collect images from one web site, a web site address such as: http://www.datafire.com
Search for images at the web site in sequence
This option lets you specify a web address (URL) to a web site or to an image, and you can include incrementing alpha or numeric values. For example the following URLs are in sequence:

http://www.test.com/001/images.html
http://www.test.com/002/images.html
http://www.test.com/003/images.html

To have WIC crawl these pages, enter the URL of http://www.test.com/[001-003]/images.html

Here is another example, this time, the following URLs are for images in sequence:

http://www.test.com/images/example_a.jpg
http://www.test.com/images/example_b.jpg
http://www.test.com/images/example_c.jpg

To have WIC download these images, enter the URL of http://www.test.com/images/example_[a-c].jpg

The following options can be placed within the “[]” brackets:
Numerical:
(you can pad as many leading zeros as needed)
[0-999999999]
[01-992]
[000032-000039]

Alpha:
(you can start and end at any letter of the alphabet)
[a-z]
[A-Z]
[a-Z]

Multiple:
(you can combine as many sequence indicators as needed)
It controls how many web sites to follow based on the originating link.

(Page links)
Do not follow links
This option restricts WIC from following web links. This is useful when you need to collect images from one web page an no others. This option is not useful for keyword based searches.

Follow links within web site
This option allows WIC to process only the links belong to the main web site you are searching. For example, if you are searching www.datafire.com and WIC finds a link to an external web site, such as www.java.com, then WIC will ignore that link. This option is not useful for keyword based searches.

Follow all links to web sites
This option will allow WIC to process any and all web links found. This option can lead to many stray and unwanted images if you are searching by a website address (URL). If you are searching by keywords, this is the best option to use.

(Image links)
Follow links within web site
This option allows WIC to collect images only on the web site you are searching. For example, if you are searching www.datafire.com and an image on the site is at www.java.com, the image will be skipped.

Link depth
This option is used in combination with the Page Links - Follow all links to web sites setting. The depth is the maximum number of chained URLs that WIC will follow based on domains.

For example, if you are searching www.datafire.com, and you specified the Page Links - Follow all links to web sites setting the following may happen:
WIC searches www.datafire.com and finds a link to www.java.com
WIC searches www.java.com and finds a link to www.netbeans.org
The link at www.netbeans.org is a link depth of 2 because it is 2 links underneath the original search URL of www.datafire.com. Since web sites may link to other external web sites, WIC can end up processing an infinite number of web sites. Using the link depth option will restrict WIC from following every web link and focus more on the top level sites of related interest.

Eliminating Thumbnails And Small Images

Web Image Collector can be configured using advanced settings to skip images that are too small such as thumbnail images. These images are usually the small version of the image that you want to download. In some cases WIC will download both the thumbnail and the full size image to your computer. To adjust this, you can use the minimum width and height restriction to filter out thumbnails and other small images.

When you create a new image collection, there are several rules that are automatically set. One of these rules is to skip all images smaller than 50 x 50 in pixels. This amount may not be enough to filter out some thumbnails, depending on the web site you are collecting images from.

To configure WIC to eliminate thumbnails and small images, you need to edit an existing image collection or select the use advanced features checkbox when creating a new image collection. To learn more about how to reach this screen, please read the tutorial on how to use advanced features.

Configure The Image Size Filter

To eliminate small images and thumbnails, you need to use the minimum image size settings on this screen.

Configure The File Size Filter

You can also eliminate small images by setting a minimum file size. Most small images also have a small file size and can be ignored by WIC.

To eliminate small images and thumbnails, you can optionally set a minimum file size.

Minimum file size
This is the smallest allowable file size in KB. Images smaller than the number here will not download. If this field is blank, this option is ignored.

http://www.test.com/003/images.html

To have WIC crawl these pages, enter the URL of http://www.test.com/[001-003]/images.html

Here is another example, this time, the following URLs are for images in sequence:

http://www.test.com/images/example_a.jpg
http://www.test.com/images/example_b.jpg
http://www.test.com/images/example_c.jpg

To have WIC download these images, enter the URL of http://www.test.com/images/example_[a-c].jpg

The following options can be placed within the “[]” brackets:
Numerical:
(you can pad as many leading zeros as needed)
[0-999999999]
[01-992]
[000032-000039]

Alpha:
(you can start and end at any letter of the alphabet)
[a-z]
[A-Z]
[a-Z]

Multiple:
(you can combine as many sequence indicators as needed)
http://www.test.com/[02-18]/images/[A-Z]/example_[d-x].jpg

Search the web for images using keywords
This option lets you specify keywords to seach the entire web for related images. You can specify one or more keywords based on the images you would like to find. You can use standard search engine tokens around keywords such as:

“Pitbull puppies” (exact phrase)
+Puppies -pitbull (include / exclude)
+Puppies +Pitbull (match any)

Search TGP sites for images using keywords
This option lets you specify keywords to seach TGP (thumbnail gallery post) web sites. TGP sites are web galleries used for posting images usually of an adult nature. You can use standard search engine tokens around keywords such described above.

Directory Page

This is the path on your computer where you would like to store the downloaded images. You can type in the path in the directory field or click the browse button to select a directory.

Create subfolders for images
This option controls how images are saved on your computer. When this option is disabled, or unchecked, images are stored in the specified directory. Otherwise, if this option is enabled, subfolders are created in the specified directory to mirror the layout of the web site images came from.

For example, if this option is enabled, and WIC finds images at the following sites:
http://www.somesite.com/images/beach/index.html
http://www.somesite.com/images/picnic/index.html
The following folders will be created within your specified directory:
www.somesite.com/images/beach/
www.somesite.com/images/picnic/

Login Page

Links Page

This is where you control how WIC follows links found on the web. The Page links option controls how WIC processes links to web pages. The Image links option controls how WIC processes links to images. The Link depth option is used in combination with the Page Links - Follow all links to web sites setting.

Follow all links to web sites
This option will allow WIC to collect images from all web links found. If you are searching by keywords, this is the best option to use. For example, if you are searching www.datafire.com and an image on the site is at www.java.com, the image will be downloaded.

Duplicates Page

These are the options for processing duplicate images. An image is a duplicate if there is already an image of the same file name downloaded to the target folder.

Skip duplicate images
This option will force WIC to skip (not download) duplicate images

Overwrite duplicate images
This option will force WIC to download and overwrite duplicate images

Save duplicate images with different file name
This option will force WIC to download and save the duplicate image with an index sich as _1 or _2 in the filename.

File Size Page

This is where you control the option of image file size filtering. This option allows you to set a minimum and or a maximum file size in kilobytes (KB). When images are downloading, they are compared to these options and if the file size does not meet the minimum or maximum settings, the image is not downloaded.

Minimum file size
This is the smallest allowable file size in KB. Images smaller than the number here will not download. If this field is blank, this option is ignored.

Maximum file size
This is the largest allowable size in KB. Images larger than the number here will not download. If this field is blank, this option is ignored.

Page URL Filter

This is where you control the filter of including and excluding web pages based on one or more keywords or regular expressions. Keywords are free text values that are compared to every URL found on a web page. Regular expressions are like wildcards on steroids which give you unlimited power to filter URLs.

If a URL contains the keyword, or if the regular expression matches the URL, it is either included or excluded in the image search. Both the include and exclude list can be used together for a more powerful search. Keywords are not case sensitive.

For example, if you have a URL Include List of: puppies;bulldogs
and you have a URL Exclude List of: thumbnails;kittens

then the following URLs would be included:

http://www.test.com/puppies/index.html
http://www.test.com/puppies/bulldogs/index.html

and the following URLs would be excluded

http://www.test.com/dogs/index.html
http://www.test.com/puppies/thumbnails/index.html
http://www.test.com/puppies/bulldogs/kittens.html

URL Include List
This is a list of keywords separated by the ‘;’ character. All URLs that contain any of the keywords in the list will be included in the search. All other URLs will be rejected.

URL Exclude List
This is a list of keywords separated by the ‘;’ character. All URLs that contain any of the keywords in the list will be excluded from the search.

Image URL Filter

This is where you control the filter of including and excluding images based on one or more keywords or regular expressions. http://www.test.com/puppies/bulldogs/aaa01.jpg

and the following URLs would be excluded

http://www.test.com/dogs/pitbulls_kittens.jpg
http://www.test.com/puppies/thumbnails/mutts.jpg

URL Include List
This is a list of keywords separated by the ‘;’ character. All image URLs that contain any of the keywords in the list will be included in the search. All other image URLs will be rejected.

URL Exclude List
This is a list of keywords separated by the ‘;’ character. All image URLs that contain any of the keywords in the list will be excluded from the search.

Image Filter Page

File Filter Page

This is where you control the filter of including or excluding images based on the file types. For example, you can include or exclude images of .JPG, .PNG and more. The case of the keywords is ignored, so you can enter .JPG or .jpg and have the same result.

Disable filter
This option will disable or turn off the filter. All entries in the filter list will remain, but will not be used.

Include only listed items
This option will include all images that contain one or more items in the list. This option results in a very limited set of results.

Exclude all listed items
This option will exclude all images that contain one or more items in the list. This option results in a clean and more specific set of results.

HTTP Headers Page

This is where you control any specific HTTP headers sent to the web sites as WIC is searching. This is an advanced feature which is not needed in most cases. There are no disable or enable switches for this option, therefore whatever entries you set here are sent to all web page and image requests. For example, if you specify the header of User-Agent as Mozilla, all requests to web pages use the header entry - User-Agent Mozilla.

Import wizard

The import wizard allows you to share your image collection settings with friends. This allows other people who have Web Image Collector to send you their image collections so that you can download the same images they have. This feature will not send the images that were downloaded, rather it sends the instructions to have your Web Image Collector download the same images.

The import wizard reads XML data containing all the settings needed for an image collection. This XML data is created by using the export wizard in Web Image Collector. You can use the XML to bring in the image collection settings a
